The decision to advance a student in rank is complex one, invoiving many factors. It is a combination of personal achivement (in relation to each individual's starting point - NOT necessarilly in comparison with other students), time at rank, consistent attendace, discipline and desire.

Promotions at the beginner level can come as soon as 6 Months. at the intermediate and advance levels, it is not unsual for promotion to take considerably longer.

For a student with high motivation who has little trouble learning and memorizing techniques and demonstrating them, and who make a seincer effort in class and at home, the path to Black SASH can take 5 years or more. BLACK SASH should be every student's goal.

The decision to hold a student back should not be taken as negative in most cases. It is not the same thing as holding a child back in a grade in their school. It is simply an adjustment in the time frame. If a student is promoted too soon, this can lead to frustration and a possible drop-out.

There is only one true TEST -- the one for BLACK SASH. Rank prior to Black SASH is awarded on the basis of the above factors as demonstrated in class. Therefore, each and every class can be thought of as a test.

The role of the parent in this process is vitally important -- helping the child at home when possible, helping a child deal with any disappointments along the way, and of vital importance - making sure the child attends class on a consistent basis.

In the serveral years it takes a child to achieve his/her BLACK SASH a positve, determined and committed attitude will be essential on the parent's part. The result will be priceless!
